The gun used during that scene was the Charter Arms Special .44 Bulldog revolver, loaded with Glaser Safety Slugs.
Although there are many facsimile models of the original Bulldog .44, the Charter Arms handgun probably comes the closest to replicating the original, which had a 2.5-inch barrel and checkered walnut grips.
Charter’s .44 Special Bulldog comes with a 3-inch blued barrel, tips the scales at 21 ounces, and has a five-round cylinder. The hammer is exposed and serrated, while the rest of the frame is stainless steel. Unlike the free-standing ejector rod on the old version, the Charter Arms version‘s ejector rod is protected by a barrel shroud. The walnut grips have also been replaced by rubber to help reduce the rather significant recoil.
At the range, one advantage of the .44 Special Bulldog quickly became apparent. The gun was similar to a semi-auto in that it was easily field stripped and reassembled.
The enormously difficult trigger pull on the old .44 Bulldog has also seen significant improvement with the updated model. Author Scott W. Wagner explains in his article “The Charter Arms .44 Special Bulldog: Compact, Reliable, Big Bore Stopper” at USConcealedCarry.com:
“Charter has made great strides with the trigger pull and the new generation of revolvers is markedly improved and much smoother than Charter’s previous generations of revolvers.”(Read more at USConcealedCarry.com)
The .44 Special Bulldog comes with the standard fixed sight set-up. Tuff Products Quickstrips, which hold five rounds in a row, are a boon to the reloading process and are highly recommended. Accuracy was not an issue for the Charter revolver either. The pistol was tested with a variety of rounds and easily met acceptable parameters for self-defense purposes with all ammo.
Charter Arms is an American company headquartered in Shelton, Connecticut with more than 50 years of handgun design and manufacturing excellence. The .44 Special Bulldog reflects this experience and as is the case with all their weapons, the revolver is delivered with a lifetime guarantee.
If you’re looking for a revolver that combines tradition, concealability and power, the Bulldog may be the right fit for your personal defense plan. At a MSRP of $405, it is worth a second look.
